Earl Young Homes and Businesses

Earl Young was an influential Charlevoix resident, an insurance salesman, and a real estate agent. He was also a gifted architect and builder, although he had no formal education or background in these two areas.

Regarded by many as a visionary designer, his structures are distinguished by the creative use of stone throughout the construction, unique rooflines, and distinctive fireplaces. The Weathervane Restaurant, an Earl Young design, has a massive stone fireplace in the main dining room complete with a keystone that weighs nine tons. His designs and homes have been featured in various publications.

Those who enjoy and appreciate architecture may wish to take a self-guided tour to view over two dozen Earl Young structures located throughout downtown Charlevoix. Maps can be found at the Chamber of Commerce or at the Charlevoix Historical Society.
