Island House Library
A picturesque symbol almost synonymous with the village itself, the historic home known as the Island House sits perched on a small islet overlooking the Elk Rapids Harbor. Built in 1865 by local businessman and lumber baron, Edwin Noble (of the famed manufacturing and lumbering duo, Dexter & Noble), the family home changed hands several times before it was ultimately donated to the Village in 1948 to house the Elk Rapids District Library.
Connected to River Street by a charming wooden bridge, the Island House grounds offer a walk along the river bank or a snooze in the shade. Its inviting architecture and welcoming side porch have convinced many a curious passerby to stop and while away a very pleasant afternoon.
Well-equipped and up-to-date, especially for a library district of its size, the Island House is a reliable source for everything from good beach reads and the latest best-sellers to fascinating chronicles of local history.
The Island House is located at 300 Isle of Pines, near the marina entrance. Hours are Monday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday & Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Sundays. Phone: 264-9979.
