Suttons Bay Marsh
Want to add some wildlife viewing to your day that won't take you too far off the beaten path? As a natural buffer from the bay's wind and waves, the Suttons Bay harbor provides a haven for both fish and aquatic birds.
A seven-acre marsh adjoins the village marina and is encircled by a barrier-free, wooden boardwalk which allows for a quiet stroll or lively wildlife watching.
Egrets, Great Blue herons and other wading birds feed placidly among the cattails, while mallards and mergansers can be seen floating peacefully through the reeds. Autumn is a particularly lively time here, as many additional duck species and geese arrive to rest and refuel on their migratory journey. Depending on Lake Michigan water levels, the marsh's appearance can change drastically, but during fairly typical periods, there are plenty of fish to see, such as catfish and carp.
An easily-accessible pier juts into the bay from the southern edge of the marsh where there was once a large coal dock, and is a great place to spend an afternoon whiling away the hours with a fishing pole in hand. Once in the village, turn east onto Adams Street and follow the signs to the marina where you will find parking, restrooms, and picnic tables.
